Plaque Characteristics: Why do I care?
The echogenicity of plaque identified in on a carotid ultrasound exam is an important indicator of the make up of the plaque. Hypoechoic plaque indicates more fat than collagen, which increases the risk of embolization. An organized classification of plaque characteristics provide the physician critical information to manage the patient.
Classification of Plaque
P1- Homogenous: S1- Smooth;
P2- Heterogenous: S2- Irregular (<2mm defect);
S3- Ulcerated (>2mm defect)
