Post Venous Ablation Imaging: What am I looking for?

This week, Leah reviews a post venous ablation case. The objective to imaging the lower extremity after an ablation procedure is two fold. First and foremost, you want to evaluate the deep system and saphenofemoral junction for thrombus. We begin this exam as we do all DVT studies: transverse compression to the knee. Next, layout the saphenofemoral junction and evaluate where the color Doppler ceases in the great saphenous vein. Please review our MME TV spot titled “Clot extension Classification” if you see thrombus in the SFJ. The second objective is to image the ablated vein for closure. Leah explains that the heat induced thrombosis occurs from outside in. This can result in a remaining patent portion in the center of the vein, this will slowly close over time. Happy scanning!
