Proximal Renal Artery Visualization

This MME TV spot was created for Sonographers, Radiologists, Vascular Surgeons and Nephrologists.

This week’s lecture discusses how to get an image of the proximal take off of the right and left renal arteries. Remember that the renal arteries do not come off at right angles to the aorta. The right renal artery sits at a 10-11:00 position and the left artery origin is at a 4-5:00 position. Most sonographers try to acquire a waveform from this position transverse plane and get frustrated.

Dr. Bill Shepherd introduces the “banana peel view”. He suggests that using an oblique approach and viewing the aorta in a sagittal plane while capturing each artery peeling off. This approach allows for an excellent Doppler angle and a more accurate velocity measurement. Try it the next time you get an order for a renal artery Doppler.
